Macquarie Speed Sailing Fins. In their attempt to set a new world sailing
speed record of over 50 knots 'Macquarie
Speed Sailing' contacted Composite Creations to
produce carbon fibre rudders and centreboards
for their high tech. yacht.

Under the high loads applied to the foils, at
these high speeds, the foils they were using
would quite simply snap off.
Composite Creations arranged for their foil
designs to be loaded in CAD. We then
arranged for CAM files to be generated for 3
axis milling of aluminium moulds and we had the
moulds produced.
Electrical heating and thermocouple
controlling was completed by Composite
Creations.
Laminate design was supplied by Lindsay
Cunningham of Macquarie Speed Sailigs.
Composite Creations carefully calculated the
laminate plan reductions to enable the laminate
to fit perfectly within these intricate solid
carbon fibre foils.
The finished foils were produced using
pre-impregnated carbon fibres and cured at 120
degrees Celsius. They were removed from their
moulds with a high gloss finish.
We look forward to seeing Macquarie Speed
Sailing break the 50 knot barrier in the
near future.
Best of luck 'Speed Freaks'!
Update: Congratulations to all the crew at
Macquarie Speed Sailing on achieving their new
world record of 50.43 knots.
