Quickie Wing Spars

In July 2001 Composite Creations was
contacted by Peter Harris, a Quickie pilot who
had an unfortunate 'engine out', resulting in
substantial damage to his wings. Peter was
unable to source new wing spars from the usual
supplier. After a quick discussion we were sent
a broken portion of the original spar as a
sample to copy.
Upon examination it was decided rather than
copy the spars we would substantially improve
them. A meeting was organised between Ian Duncan
and Peter Tenhave, of Macquarie University Mech.
Engineering. at which time a new laminate was agreed
upon.
The now all carbon wing spars are produce
using pre-impregnated fibres, hand laid on a
spun tapered aluminium mandrel, tape consolidated and
oven cured at 120 degrees Celsius. They have an improved torsional and hoop
strength and a Tg. of approx 130 degrees C.
Spar ends are partially filled with expanded
epoxy foam to further increase hoop strength.

Spars are now sold upon request to members of
the Quickie Association via Peter Harris
